Sketch of the Week

Today I'm giving you a preview of what I'll be using for my first etching plate in the class I'm taking at BCA.

This is a prehistoric skull I sketched at the Field Museum last summer, when I was visiting friends in Chicago. I've always loved the Field, so I made sure to visit it again. There was a special exhibit called Extreme Mammals taking place while I was there, and it was full of skulls, bones, and models of bizarre prehistoric mammals. This particular specimen is a distant relative of the giraffe.

I've always loved drawing skulls, but I thought that the rugged, weathered appearance of this fellow would encourage textural exploration as I begin delving into the possibilities of etching. Besides, it looks cool, doesn't it?
