Sketch of the Week: Shorebird

Shorebird folk sculptures are a quintessentially Maine decorative object, right up there with lobster traps, shells, and other items evoking the rugged beauty of the New England coast. You can find them in most any tourist shop nowadays, though as is the case in many things, vintage ones are preferable.

My parents have one of these buggers in their guest bedroom upstairs, so I made a point of sketching it. The stark contrast between the bright, snowy day outside the window and the dark, weathered silhouette of the bird was what caught my visual attention.
