Sketch of the Week: Philodendron

I received an early gift of some charcoal pencils for Christmas, and took them back to Maine with me over the holiday break to try them out. My mother has a wonderful array of houseplants replete with interesting flowers, leaves, and other shapes for drawing, so for one of my first test runs I picked her philodendron.
The flower on the left, standing by itself against a plain background, reminds me of a lithograph by Victoria Hutson Huntley. In that instance, it was a jack in-the-pulpit, but the graphic mood is similar. The pencils themselves are great, and I look forward to doing many more sketches and drawings with them.
