I was walking home one day last year when work when I noticed that the sycamore trees were shedding their distinctive, basketball-like seeds. I grabbed a few and brought them home with the intention of doing some sketching. As I tossed them on the counter, they rolled by some leftover yarn a friend had sent along with an infinity scarf she had knitted me. I liked the resulting pairing of different textures and colors, so I created a little still life:
I left the seeds black and white in order to heighten the multi-colored yarn. I liked the way that the sketch is simultaneously representational and abstract, and have done quite a few studies involving these little guys.
