Back in 2007, while studying in Florence, I spent a few days on the island of Elba with a couple of friends. Once Napoleon's place of exile, today it's a beach resort kind of town. Within a few hours I'd gotten bored with the beaches and started wandering around the island. While walking past a garden, I encountered an artichoke plant. I didn't know what an actual artichoke plant looked like, having only seen the produce in stores, so I felt compelled to draw it.
