Nicodemus, according to the Gospel of John, was a Pharisee who assisted with the burial of Jesus following the Crucifixion. He is venerated as a Christian saint, and you'll often find him assisting in deposition scenes, usually standing on a ladder to help lower the body, or in the case of this drawing, removing the nails.
This sketch represents part of a medieval Deposition scene I saw in Volterra, Italy back in 2007. Aside from the fantastically lyrical medieval drawing, I drew Nicodemus because he reminded me of my dad, who also happens to be a bearded man with a penchant for carpentry.
