Well it's hard to believe, but I've been at the Roswell Museum for three years now. Tempus fugit indeed! In honor the occasion, I've put up a sketch of one of New Mexico's quintessential critters: the vinegaroon!
A member of the arachnid family, vinegaroons are so-named for the vinegar smell they emit if you so happen to step on one and crush it. Despite their startling appearance, they're actually good critters to have around, eating scorpions and other nasty buggies. Gracious though, are they odd-looking. It's as though someone assembled leftover lobster, spider, and scorpion parts, smacked on a long tail for good measure, and called it a day.
