One of the artists that I was immediately taken with when I arrived at the Roswell Museum was Gustave Baumann. I love his colorful woodcuts, and my travels around the state have introduced me to his fine woodcarving as well, whether they're in the doorways at Los Poblanos or in his whimsical marionettes. Around 2013-2014 I became really interested in doing multi-block color linocuts in the style of Baumann, and at one point had picked Bitter Lakes as my subject.
The right image is just what the final black outline would have looked like, while the image on the left has me braking down the original composition into its different color groups. I never did do anything with this, but it was still an interesting exercise.
